Big portions for big appetites in a teeny space for a tiny bill Easy to find, right next to the railroad tracks. A bright red building that you can't miss. Ample parking Quint, cozy train décor I think it seats 15. Maybe. I had the Red Caboose Meal which was a cheeseburger and fries. Burgers are cooked to order and cooked just right. Filled me up all day long; no snacking needed.

Food: 2/5, Service: 3/5. greasy spoon, hole-in-the-wall diner. the burgers are better than the breakfast.

Choo-Choo burgers are great! Last week I had a bacon cheese burger, fries and vanilla shake (complete with the cookie). The small space and limited hours add to the charm.

The BEST burgers in GR. Just get there for lunch early or late, as the seating is so sparse as to be nearly non-existent. The menu is pretty short, and it's really tiny, but the burgers and shakes are just great. As mentioned, don't even think about dinner at the Choo Choo, since they close early. However, if the lack of seating deters you, they do takeout orders, even by phone!

Nostalgia, Fun, Greasy, Malts, Shakes, Melts, and Burger...OO the burgers.... Seating for ~12 despite a sign stating 22. Make sure you show up early or can wait for a seat. It's an extremely small place (an actual old train depot). Right smack dab on the corner of Plainfield and Leonard. Can't miss it. Parties larger than 3 may have issues.

Like most GR restaurants it's overrated. It's quirky and somewhat charming. Nothing special. food is average. You can go to BK and get something that tastes better/cheaper.

A unique place. Good food. Worth the trip.

The Choo Choo has great burgers. Never frozen local meat. Unique setting. One of the best places to get a burger in GR. I would give them a fifth star if they kept longer hours.

Over rated. This place definitely has a cult following and a group of regulars that think highly of it.

Just as the previous post stated. Tiny but very welcoming. Had burgers on rye. Very tasty. Didn't have a wait but it was full up. The service is top notch almost lunch and a show. Great place to meet what could be new friends. I will stop again when in town.

Pretty much the best place ever, anywhere. Tight, diner seating and a few tables can make it awkward for new comers in a place where everyone seems to know everyone but they do take out as well. Takes a little to get your food because they have one woman working at a tiny grill/fryer. You can literally watch her make and assemble your meal! I try not to use this word to describe adults but it's freaking adorable! Enjoyable experience even though the atmosphere was slightly off when I was there.

Excellent burgers at a classic burger and shake shop that is a Grand Rapids icon. It can get a bit busy right at the lunch hour but they work hard to get you served. Take a seat at the counter to enjoy good food and conversation.

Uh, how could I have lived in GR for over 13 years and not ever been here??? Again, as with all reviews, I will rate based on the particular establishment type. This is a small, local, greasy spoon type of place that specializes in hamburgers. Is the food here better than that at San Chez or Judson's Steakhouse? Well, no, but the rating is higher because it accomplishes what it set out to do. Basic, no-frills burgers, big thick-cut steak fries and big milkshakes. Apples to apples, folks. A tiny building. You can eat in, but it cannot accommodate many patrons. More than enough parking for the building size. The people inside are friendly and welcoming - this is so important in such a place that if it is absent, it totally diminishes the experience. Here, the folks are great. The food is very reasonably priced for the portions you get, which are quite large. The hamburgers are extremely good and cooked properly to order. As I have an affectation for huge burgers, I love a place that does them correctly. Haute cuisine it is not, but I left with a full belly, a jingle in my pocket and a smile on my face.

I had been curious about this little oddity of an establishment for quite some time given it's diminutive stature. It looks like something out of one of those miniature Christmas village things. Inside is TINY. As the name would imply, it is chock full of railroad memorabilia. There are two small booths that could each seat approximately 4 small-medium size people, and there is a counter for about 8 people. With that said, the employees are all up in your business. They have no choice. There is nowhere else for them to go. All the food is made at a grill in plain view. The owner is friendly and easy going, and you know you are supporting these people directly. With that said, the food was okay. The burgers were nothing special at all, just frozen patties but they're perfectly cooked with the edges a little crispy. The fries were steak fries from dirty grease, again nothing special. The prices are reasonable, but not "dirt cheap" as some reviews have implied. I think a burger was about $6 and fries about $3. In summary, the food was standard greasy spoon diner fare for a reasonable price and the charm is the ambience and the small town diner feel. I'm glad I went, but no need to go back.

My sister and I came into Choo Choo Grill an hour before close. We were greeted by a nice middle aged woman with brown hair who said "what are you drinking girls?" as we walked in. We got two root beers in the frosted mugs- very good, high quality. A little expensive for a BLT and a grilled cheese but what can you do, gotta make a living. This woman made conversation with us and made us feel welcomed! The local gossip was just as sweet as the food. We enjoyed hearing many tales of the crazy customers and the violent crimes that have happened in the neighborhood. We basically just sat there in silence as we listened to what's going on in this little Choo Choo world. Also everyone basically hates Annette...whoever that is. Plz go here you won't regret it, the breakfast sounds good!

Great local dive. I ate here while waiting for my car to be ready at Enterpise just down the street. It's a local environ with a strictly local clientele. I was the only one in there who didn't know everyone else or the owner, server, cook. Authentic place and where else can you get a malt? Seriously.

One of the best burger joints in GR. I have eaten at the Choo Choo several times for lunch and have enjoyed it every time, never had a subpar experience. The burgers are nice and juicy and the buns toasted to perfection. The steak fries are excellent, I always have a difficult time choosing between the fries and onion rings which are also great. I really like the small diner feel along with the banter that goes back and forth between the folks that own/work there. Unfortunately because it is a very small restaurant, seating is very limited, only a few booths along with seating at the counter. My advice is to plan accordingly to beat the lunch crowd.

I have been wanting to stop in here for a long time. I have heard good things about their burgers & I definitely like a good burger. I had a day off so I decided it was the time to give them a try. Even though the place looks very small it was even smaller inside than it looks from the outside! Very limited seating but it seems to work ok for them! The staff was very friendly! The burger & fries I got were just ok. I didn't love it, didn't hate it. I liked the staff better than the burger to be honest. The chocolate peanut butter malt was quite tasty! I am definitely glad I finally tried this place. I would go here again but with the hours they have it isn't likely to be any time soon.

SO SMALL!! I was amazed that we could even eat inside, but after looking on Yelp, I saw that someone had posted some pictures and sure enough, you can eat inside. We counted and I think it can sit 15 people. We went for lunch and thankfully got a booth. NOTE: There is no bike rack if you ride your bikes. Our burgers were delicious with fresh toppings. The service was great. I wanted to try a malt but will have to another time. They had big steak fries which were amazing and the onion rings were good too! About $8-10 a person depending on what you get.

Great burger. Very much a locals joint. It's the Cheers! of the lunch time crowd. They know each other, take care of new people, and serve a really good burger. The prices are inexpensive, and the parking is limited... but it's worth the effort! You will be rewarded! 4 STARS

checked out this cafe when we missed our exit to go to Panera Bread on our trip home from Chicago. I think this could be our new travel stop. Great history with the building that is grandfathered in so it retains all the original charm of the years. Lots of train paraphenalia on the walls. Perfect for the grilled burger (and grilled bun) and great malts that are delivered in the tin still. The waitress there was so friendly too!

This is a vintage little burger joint with the best burger in GR. Now, if you want a fancy schmanzy burger on a pretzel bun or made of prime rib, you will be disappointed because this is good flavored meat done on a seasoned griddle and served on a soft but toasted bun with just your usual toppings... no jalapeno peppers or goat cheese, etc. No beer but they have awesome shakes and malts made of real ice cream and milk. Service is friendly, chatty and they get to know you. Yes, there are regulars who are there every day for lunch. take out is a good option if you have claustrophobia!

Everything you've heard about this place is true. The burgers are the best in GR (Sorry Stella's & OTP), breakfast is phenomenal, seating is very limited (about 15 ppl tops), the chocolate malts are to die for and we all wish they stayed open longer (close at 3pm most days). Still...it is one of my favorite places in Grand Rapids and well worth the few drawbacks to enjoy some of the best comfort food in the area.

Burgers at the Choo Choo are like the 5 star rating says, "As good as it gets!" Don't let any limited seating scare you away, the service is so friendly and quick even if you have to wait you'll still be in and out in 25 minutes. Small town atmosphere fills the room it's a must on any GR list of to-dos. Guy F. from DDD should make a stop here.

A Grand Rapids landmark. Great diner burger -- their grill is seasoned!! Burgers are good, but try the peanut butter chocolate shake. Tiny restaurant. They do take-out, or come before/after lunch rush. Open only till 4 pm. Breakfast and lunch only.

in reality, for the quality of the food i would give this place a two star, however, because i love the atmosphere so much i gave it three stars. they are so incredibly nice that you entirely forget that you are in a city and think youre in a small town. they always say "see you tomorrow" as you leave. i always see the same people in there and they are always very friendly even when i've run into them outside the place. the food isn't really quality but it is cheap. it's basically a little better than a fast food burger but just by a little bit. the malts are amazing. they are the best malts i've had in many many years. i will keep coming back here for the malts and the kind service alone.

Best Burgers in town! Small family owned diner so you know the foods good! Friendly atmosphere and great for kids and grand kids!

Lets start out by saying this is a hole in the wall with very limited hours. That being said they have the BEST burgers. The burger comes with very good steak fries. The milkshakes are killer too, real ice cream. They also serve breakfast, but I've never tried it. Highly highly recommend.

I went here with my mom, the food was ok, and the staff was very nice, but the best part of this place is the history lession you get from just sitting inside for a while. One of the most interesting buildings I have found in GR. Warning the building is very tiny, like it feels crowded if there are more then 5 or 6 people in it. But everyone is always friendly, so its ok.

This place is expensive. My bill came to 11.95$ and that is without the tip. There are no combo basket. You have to order everything al'e cart. However the service is really good, hence the two stars, and they make u feel very comfortable. Like many have said before me the place is small and they close at 4pm. As for the food, the burgers is not as specials as many of the reviewers would have you to believe. Trust me, I am a burger man and know a good burger when I eat one. Mcdonalds new Angus burger is better than the burger served here. The fries are staek fries and cost around 3 dollars. If I had to pick the best item I ate, actually I drunk it, it would be the malt and even that was inconsistent at best. It was not blended very well and that cost 4 dollars, This is a place that I will not be visiting again. I feel that yelp reveiwers let me down.

I have come to this restaurant for 50 years! Yes, it's still in the same family as when I was there so long ago. On a trip to Saugatuck, MI. we stopped in for lunch. It was just as good as I had remembered! Too bad the burgers aren't still 5 for $1.00! If you stop in be prepared to wait for a seat - there are 2 booths and about 10 stools at the bar ~ WELL worth what you go through. Hint - go after 1:00P.M. if you can - seating is easier!
